education
Many top political leaders world-wide would agree that a smarter population creates a stronger civilization. Using that as a given, it would make sense that a better education system would lead to a smarter population, which in turn would create a stronger civilization. However, before slavery's abolishment, the strong majority of the white US population believed that people of dark skin had an intellectual curve, and could only learn a certain amount, after which they could not learn anything else.. As it turns out, the majority of the white US population was wrong and people of dark skin do in fact have the same mental capabilities of any white person. Does not that mean that by giving african-americans their freedom and giving them an education, we in turn created a smarted population and thus a stronger country?
Before slavery was abolished, there were multiple schools for african-americans, the majority of which existed in the north. These schools were few and far apart and it was not until slavery was officially abolished that large numbers of african-american schools began to sprout up. One of the first african american school of greater learning was Howard University, a school that is still alive and has significant recognition. It is important to note that other than a few colleges or universities, these original schools provided very poor education, and higher quality, racially integrated schools would not come around for another 100 years. However, these original schools did teach reading and writing, which is relativley invaluable to have as a skill.
